New Report: preventing future E. coli O157 outbreaks
Since last fall, the fresh leafy greens industry has diligently focused on how to prevent another E. coli 0157 outbreak. The good news is that growers and processors, especially in California, have adopted new prevention-based food safety practices. Natural Selection Foods, for instance, which does business as Earthbound Farm, has a new "test and hold" program, that is reported to be working as hoped assuring that all shipped product is pathogen-free.
The Organic Center's just-released report by Chief Scientist, Dr. Charles Benbrook, Unfinished Business: Preventing E. coli O157 Outbreaks Caused by Leafy Greens, offers fresh insight, clear perspective and promising solutions to improve food safety. At a recent Torhavn, Faroe Islands, conference attended by 200 biologists, toxicologists, epidemiologists, nutrition researchers and pediatricians, an international group of scientists issued a powerful statement. They called for the need to shift the focus of toxicology and chemical regulation from the centuries-old paradigm"the dose makes the poison"to "the timing of exposures makes the poison."
The Faroes Statement highlights the extraordinary vulnerability of the fetus, and the many ways that exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals can alter normal developmental pathways, sometimes with lifelong consequences. This statement reflects a growing sense of urgency within the scientific community regarding the need for much stronger, preventive-based actions to minimize exposures to a range of chemicals that now routinely are present in food and drinking water. As addressed in several Organic Center reports, organic farming is the most cost-effective way to dramatically reduce pesticide exposuresand for the next generation, this is clearly a major step in the right direction. In its June, 2007 issue, the respected, 30-year-old publication Environmental Nutrition includes an article entitled, "Is It Safer To Eat Organic Spinach...Or Peaches Or Apples? EN Weighs In."
The publication's analysis draws heavily on reports from The Organic Center. They conclude that organic food contains far fewer pesticide residues, is better for the environment and poses no greater risk of microbiological contamination. These advantages, say Environmental Nutrition editors, "make buying organic a wise decision." New Link to Low Male Sperm Count Growth hormones in cattle can affect male sexual development
A new study published in the March 28, 2007 journal, Human Reproduction, concludes that "...maternal beef consumption is associated with lower sperm concentration and possible sub-fertility; associations that may be related to the presence of anabolic steroids and other xenobiotics in beef." (Xenobiotics are synthetic chemicals believed to be resistant to environmental degradation.)
Since almost all beef cattle entering feedlots in the United States are given hormone implants to promote faster growth, this new study lends urgency to the long-recognized need for the FDA to reconsider the acceptable daily intakes of growth hormones in beef feedlots. Another GM Soybean to the Rescue As Roundup Ready technology collapses, Monsanto is planning more of the same Weeds resistant to glyphosate (Roundup) herbicide are emerging across the country and spreading fast, according to the scientific community. Farmers are advised to spray more Roundup, more often, and add new herbicides specifically chosen to control weeds resistant to Roundup. Now Monsanto has announced that within a couple years, it will introduce a new GM soybean that is resistant to the herbicide dicamba. This new development is addressed in the May 25th issue of Science Magazine, and is covered as a new "Hot Science" item on The Organic Center's website. Click here to learn more. Groundbreaking Book!
