"What Will It Take to Change the American Food System"
April 2003
Author(s): Charles Benbrook
Gene Kahn, a founding board member of The Organic Center, invited Chuck Benbrook to speak on a panel he organized for the 2003 Kellogg Foundation Food and Society Conference. Gene asked Chuck to describe what it would take to transform the American food system to sustainable systems in a reasonably short period of time, e.g. two decades. Gene gave Chuck 15 minutes on the program.
After humming the "Mission Impossible" theme, Chuck decided to take on the challenge. His Powerpoint contained 29 slides, and an accompanying paper discussed in more detail each of the 17 policy changes identified as essential to major change.
By popular demand, the Center is reposting the presentation and paper.
