Organic Confluences during Organic Week in Washington, D.C.
The Organic Trade Association is partnering with The Organic Center to kick off Organic Week on Tuesday, May 9 by presenting the 2023 Organic Confluences: Reducing Plastics Along the Entire Organic Supply Chain. We are bringing together scientists and industry experts for insightful panel discussions to help your business reduce plastics and create a more sustainable future for organic. Organic Confluences sessions will take place throughout the day on Tuesday and the morning of Conference Day on Wednesday. All registrants who are nonmembers of the Organic Trade Association will get access to two out of the three-day event including Confluences, Leadership Awards Reception, and Conference Day.

Organic Confluences Programming Day 1: Current Use of Plastics in Organic and Future Directions What is the role of plastic in our food system?Presentation and Q&A on the role of plastic in our food system and environment. Researchers and Farmers will present their top-level findings on how plastic enters the environment and human bodies, and how the use of plastic impacts farmer livelihoods, while the production of plastic impacts environmental justice.
Use of Plastics in Organic – session examining how plastics are used as important tools throughout the supply chain, highlighting challenges that organic stakeholders face in implementing feasible alternatives.
Organic Regulations and Plastics: Policies, Pathways, and Challenges –panel including updates from NOP regulators on the status of plastic regulation for organic, organic, including international efforts as examples.
Breakout Sessions – conference participants will break into small groups to participate in interactive discussions across stakeholder groups identifying the biggest challenges and potential solutions to those challenges.
Day 2: Exploring Plastic Alternatives and Building a Roadmap for the Future
The Future of Non-Input Synthetics, Recycling and Plastic-Alternatives in Organic – session exploring the need for a framework to develop discussions around the non-input use of synthetic plastic alternatives in organic. This session will discuss the conversations that need to be had to make big shifts in plastic use and demonstrate successes in these shifts.
Innovations in Plastic Alternatives: Lightning Session – Organic stakeholders have been getting creative, especially in times of COVID, to reduce plastic in the field, packaging for distribution and retail, and transporting food to home (from the store, food delivery). These rapid, 5-minute presentations will highlight case studies where farmers, processors, and distributors have used novel alternatives to plastic.
OTA Members are invited to participate in the full lineup of programming planned for Organic Week D.C. The OTA Member registration track costs $699 and includes access to Confluences, Leadership Awards Reception, Conference Day, and Advocacy Day.
