New Years Resolution Two: Keep it Cool

Several studies this year focused on the impacts of organic farming on climate change, and showed that choosing organic can help mitigate the release of greenhouse gases while sequestering carbon in the soil. One study found that a one percent increase in organic acreage in the U.S. could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by .049%. Researchers wrote that their study “provides evidence supporting potential greenhouse gas mitigation benefits associated with organic food production.” Another study looked at the complexity of rotations in addition to management style, and found that greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by organic management and longer, more complex crop rotations.
